GLT Accompaniment: Ecuador

The visit to MSC Ecuador (23–30 July) provided an opportunity to gain a closer insight into the lives and mission of the confreres amidst the realities of the local Church and society. Overall, I found an MSC community that is young, vibrant and full of hope. Despite facing various pastoral and social challenges, the confreres expressed joy in their vocation and a strong zeal for mission.

One of the strengths of MSC Ecuador is community life. The confreres experience communication, fraternity and mutual support. Language and cultural differences are not barriers, but rather a source of richness that enriches their missionary experience. For them, the process of adapting to the local language, climate and culture is also an important part of their journey of inculturation.

Pastoral ministry is very dynamic. The confreres serve parishes with numerous communities, providing sacramental ministry, catechesis, youth ministry, social work and the promotion of vocations (Tixan, Palmira, Chunchi, Quito). Staff shortages, administrative issues and security concerns present real challenges in their day-to-day mission.

This visit also provided an opportunity to reflect together with the confreres in Ecuador on several key directions for the Congregation as a whole: building a servant and synodal leadership, developing safeguarding as a culture of mutual care, strengthening community life, and fostering a spirit of congregationality—in this context, involvement in the Mission of the Congregation.

Thank you to all the MSC confreres working in Ecuador. Amidst all the challenges, you continue to bear witness that fraternity, joy in one’s vocation, and a willingness to keep learning can be a source of strength in our mission. May this spirit continue to grow so that the Spirituality of the Heart becomes ever more evident through the presence and service of the MSC in Ecuador.
