Saint Peter ToRot - AMETUR MSC

On 19 October 2025, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate the canonisation of Blessed Martyr MSC Peter To Rot. His case is special for several reasons: he will be the first native Papuan saint, a fervent defender of marriage and the family, a catechist committed to the mission of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and, consequently, his holiness is the fruit of close collaboration between priests and lay people in evangelisation.

"The figure of the lay catechist from Papua New Guinea, the 'equivalent' process of his canonisation, and his legacy for Christians today" are the topics at the heart of the interview with Father Fernando Clemente, Missionary of the Sacred Heart, postulator of the cause for canonisation of Pedro To Rot.

The new official portrait of PNG’s first canonised Saint

A new portrait of Blessed Peter To Rot has been created by internationally renowned Spanish artist Raul Bersoza Fernandez. The portrait will be used during the canonisation ceremony in Rome on October 19. At beatifications and canonisations, it is customary to display an image of the new blessed or saint on the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica, in the Vatican.

I am in prison for those who break their marriage vows and for those who do not want to see God's work go forward. That is all. I must die. I have already been condemned to death”.

Leo XIII's request to Jules Chevalier: Create a 'local Church' in Papua New Guinea

Fr Abzalon Alvarado: The Pope will find a strong and multicoloured Church in Papua

"The origin of the mission in Papua New Guinea, the difficulties of the first proclamation of the Gospel, the current challenges to the Christian community on the island, the emergence of native vocations and the first Papuan Blessed", are some of the topics at the centre of the interview with Father Mario Abzalón Alvarado Tovar, Superior General of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, in view of the apostolic journey of the Holy Father to Asia and Oceania next September.

The mission in Papua became a social model: church, clinic and school.

The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart began construction of a local church, which now has priests, bishops, a cardinal, and even a blessed person born in the country. The birth of the local church, the creation of health clinics, and the building of schools gave rise to this social structure that is still called "Mission" today.

A witness of Gospel values amid adversity

The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Papua New Guinea provide education and health services to remote communities. A few weeks before Pope Francis’ Apostolic Journey to Asia and Oceania, L’Osservatore Romano spoke with Father Sylvester Warwakai, provincial superior of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Papua New Guinea. “The Church continues to witness to the values of the Gospel in the midst of all the adversities and challenges facing the country,” he said.

This report concludes a series of three articles dedicated to the missionary work begun at the end of the 19th century by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Papua New Guinea, where Pope Francis will travel in September.

Papua: A faith enriched by the work of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart

Archbishop Rochus Joseph Tatamai, MSC, of the Archdiocese of Rabaul in Papua New Guinea, talks about Pope Francis' visit: "Even though we are far away and on the periphery, we have a vibrant Church, we have a vibrant faith, and our young people still fill our churches".

Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”.

During this novena, in December 1854, we promised the Blessed Virgin that if she heard our prayer, we would take the title, Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and that we would strive to carry out fully the beautiful and profound meaning of this title. (Jules Chevalier, 1862)
